Fondation Maeght

The Fondation Maeght, opened in 1964 above Saint-Paul-de-Vence, is a private museum founded by gallerists Aimee and Marguerite Maeght after the death of their son. Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sert designed the building hand in hand with the artists: Joan Miro filled a garden with ceramic fountains and bronzes, Alberto Giacometti occupies an entire courtyard with his elongated figures, and Marc Chagall, Georges Braque and Fernand Leger contributed mosaics and stained glass. The collection of roughly 13,000 works ranks among Europe's great private holdings of postwar art. Visitors today wander through pine-scented gardens and intimate halls where modern sculpture and Mediterranean light meet. Rotating exhibitions complement the permanent collection.
