Basil & Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum, Athens

The Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation Museum in the Pangrati district of Athens opened in 2019 after decades of delay, finally bringing to the city the private collection of the Greek shipowning Goulandris family, which had previously been stored in Switzerland and on Andros. Spread over several floors are more than 180 works by Cezanne, van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, Monet, Chagall, Pollock, Bacon, Giacometti and Rodin, alongside Greek modernists such as Tsarouchis and Moralis. Construction began in 2012, and the building was inaugurated by then-President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on 1 October 2019. It sits just off the usual tourist line between Plaka and the Panathenaic Stadium, easy to reach for a half-day visit, and offers a more concentrated experience than the major state museums.
