Fontibón

One of Bogotá's oldest districts, founded in 1554 and now the city's western gateway — largely shaped by its proximity to El Dorado airport.

Fontibón is the 9th locality of Bogotá, situated west of the city centre on the flat savanna of Bogotá. Its history stretches back to 1554, when the Spanish established an independent settlement here. For four centuries Fontibón remained a separate municipality before being incorporated into the capital district in 1954. Today the district is best known for its proximity to El Dorado International Airport and its heavily commercial character. Home to around 345,000 residents, Fontibón blends Colombian everyday culture with the busy economic life of a modern metropolis.
