Bogotá Botanical Garden

Bogotá's botanical research garden (founded 1955), named after explorer-botanist José Celestino Mutis — 19 hectares of Andean and tropical flora in the heart of the city.

The Jardín Botánico de Bogotá José Celestino Mutis, located in the Engativá district in western Bogotá, has been one of Colombia's leading botanical research and education institutions since its founding in 1955. Named after Spanish priest and botanist José Celestino Mutis, who led a celebrated botanical expedition through Colombia in 1783, the garden preserves an exceptional diversity of native flora across 19 hectares. The focus falls particularly on the vegetation of the Colombian highlands and Andean forests — one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened ecosystems. School groups, families, and nature lovers visit it as a green lung in the otherwise densely built South American metropolis.
