Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial at the Tidal Basin in Washington was dedicated by President Bill Clinton in 1997 and commemorates Roosevelt's four terms in office between 1933 and 1945 through four open-air rooms. Architect Lawrence Halprin designed the site as a spatial narrative through the Great Depression, the New Deal, World War II and Roosevelt's death. Cascades, granite walls with engraved quotations and bronze sculptures by George Segal and others stage key moments - a Depression-era bread line, a man at the radio during a fireside chat, Eleanor Roosevelt as UN delegate. A later-added section shows FDR seated in his wheelchair, breaking with the deliberate concealment of his disability during the presidency. The shaded walk is among the most meditative stops along the National Mall.
