Kreeger Museum

The Kreeger Museum is a private art museum in northwest Washington housed in the former residence of collectors David and Carmen Kreeger. Philip Johnson and Richard Foster designed the building in the late 1960s as a sculptural travertine composition of domed ceilings and deep arched windows, intended to function as both home and gallery. The Kreegers collected Impressionists and Post-Impressionists alongside African sculpture, arranging their domestic life around the works so that Monet water lilies and Picasso portraits hung in the rooms where the family actually lived. Today small docent-led groups move through a collection that includes Kandinsky, Munch and Renoir. The sculpture garden is freely accessible and shows works beneath mature trees away from the city bustle.
