Wilanów Cemetery

The Wilanow Cemetery is a Roman Catholic burial ground in southern Warsaw's Wilanow district, not far from King John III Sobieski's famous summer palace. Founded in the early 19th century as the parish cemetery of the local Saint Anne's church, it has grown over two centuries to about 2.8 hectares. The whole site has been listed since 1973. Members of the Polish aristocracy, soldiers from both world wars and residents of the once-village of Wilanow rest here. Unlike Warsaw's monumental main cemeteries at Powazki and Brodno, Wilanow remains a quieter, locally rooted slice of Poland: old lindens, wrought-iron crosses, Polish inscriptions, the occasional candle. If you visit Wilanow Palace, the short detour rewards you with a very civic Polish cemetery that tells the story of the neighbourhood.
