St George's Convent

Bohemia's oldest convent at Prague Castle — a 10th-century Romanesque basilica with medieval frescoes and Přemyslid royal tombs.

St George's Convent at Prague Castle is one of the oldest sacred buildings in Bohemia. The adjoining Basilica of St George was built before 921 CE and ranks among the most important Romanesque churches in Central Europe. The Benedictine convent, founded in 976, was the first monastery on Bohemian soil and flourished under the Přemyslids, the first Bohemian royal dynasty. Many abbesses came from this royal family, making the convent a centre of power for noblewomen. The church contains significant medieval frescoes and the burial tombs of early Bohemian rulers. Today the convent is part of the National Gallery Prague.
