Garden on the Ramparts

The Wallgarten — Garden on the Ramparts — is the largest of Prague Castle's southern gardens at 1.4 hectares, stretching from the Paradise Garden in the west to Lobkowicz Palace in the east along the castle's south facade. Its name makes its origins explicit: the garden was laid out directly on the earthworks of medieval defensive ramparts, making it one of the rare urban parks literally built on former city fortifications. As part of the national cultural monument of Prague Castle, it shares an ensemble with the Paradise and Hartig gardens, all of which were given their current terraced character during 20th-century redesigns associated with architect Josip Plečnik. Visitors follow broad grass terraces with open views over Prague's Old Town rooftops and the Petřín hill — a quieter vantage point well away from the crowded castle main circuit.
