Gutleutkapelle

The Gutleutkapelle in Mosbach is part of a late-medieval ensemble comprising a Gutleuthaus (poorhouse) and Elendshaus (house of misery), once located north of the city walls — a deliberate placement typical of institutions that cared for the sick, destitute, and socially excluded, including likely lepers. Around 1520, the complex was incorporated into the newly established Mosbach cemetery, forming its distinctive entrance area to this day. Protected as a Kulturdenkmal, the chapel offers a rare glimpse into medieval welfare practice at the urban fringe, where such facilities were kept outside city walls to shield the general population. The small chapel remains accessible as a quiet place of contemplation at the cemetery entrance.
