Hazmburk Castle (Hasenburg)

Also known as: Hrad Klapý, Hrad Házmburk, Burg Hazmburk

Prague

Gothic castle ruin on the summit of the Bohemian Central Highlands' most distinctive peak — a hiking destination with a sweeping panorama across Bohemia.

Hazmburk is one of the most distinctive peaks in the Bohemian Central Highlands and is regarded as the landmark of the entire region. On its summit stand the ruins of the Gothic castle of Hazmburk, built around 1300 and the ancestral seat of the Bohemian noble family Zajíc of Hasenburg. The ruin with its two prominent towers — a round keep and a rectangular residential tower — is a popular hiking destination and rewards a short ascent with a spectacular panorama across the Ohře valley and the Bohemian lowlands to distant ridges. The castle was an important lordly residence in the Middle Ages; today it invites visitors to a memorable combination of history and natural experience.
