Haydnpark

The Haydnpark in Vienna's 12th district Meidling was laid out in 1926 on the disused Hundsturm cemetery, a suburban graveyard closed in 1874. It owes its name to Joseph Haydn, who after his death in 1809 was first buried here before his body was reinterred in 1820 in the Esterhazy castle at Eisenstadt. The original gravestone survives and stands as a monument in the centre of the park. Other old cemetery stones lie alongside as silent reminders, a typically Viennese pattern of park-on-cemetery. The park itself is small and shaded with a playground, old trees and benches, a local meeting spot for Meidling residents rather than a tourist destination.
