Heerderberg, Lourdesgrot

The Lourdes Grotto at Heerderberg is a Roman Catholic replica of the Marian grotto of Lourdes, set into a wooded hillside on the outskirts of Maastricht. Replica grottos of this kind were built widely across the Low Countries between roughly 1880 and 1930, offering local pilgrims a devotional substitute for the journey to southern France. Today it remains a quiet site of Marian veneration and personal prayer, reached by footpaths through the greenery of the Heerderberg.
