Heiligengeistkirche

The Holy Spirit Church on Burgstrasse in Potsdam was an 86-metre baroque building and together with the Nikolaikirche and the Garrison Church formed the famous Dreikirchenblick, the three-church silhouette that defined Potsdam's skyline for over 200 years. Built 1726 to 1728 under King Frederick William I to designs by Pierre de Gayette and Johann Friedrich Grael, it burned out after Allied bombing in April 1945 and was finally demolished by the GDR government in 1974; a retirement home took its place. Today only a slender modern stele echoing the lost steeple marks the church's former position, and the historic three-church view remains incomplete.
