Heumarkt

The Heumarkt is Cologne's largest inner-city square, wedged between the medieval Altstadt and the Rhine — a space that has channeled commerce and public life since the Middle Ages, when it served as the city's primary hay and grain trading post (Heu meaning hay). At its center stands an 1878 equestrian statue of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, sculpted by Gustav Blaeser and erected as a deliberate symbol of Prussian dominion over the Rhineland. In December it hosts one of Cologne's oldest Christmas markets, and during carnival season it becomes one of the main arteries of street carnival, with crowds stretching back toward the Deutzer Brücke. Year-round, the square functions as a transit hub for several tram lines, flanked by beer gardens, pubs, and street musicians who fill the space between the city's seasonal peaks.
