Haidhausen French Quarter

The Franzosenviertel — literally 'French Quarter' — in Munich's Haidhausen district is one of the city's most intact Gründerzeit neighborhoods, developed in the decade following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71. Its peculiar name traces to French prisoners of war who were quartered here, a fact commemorated in street names like Pariser Strasse, Lyoner Strasse, and Bordeaux Platz — a small toponymic monument embedded in the city's east bank grid. Rows of Wilhelmine-era tenements with ornate stucco facades define the streetscape, their ground floors now occupied by owner-run wine bars, independent cafés, and small galleries. The Bordeaux Platz, shaded by old chestnut trees, serves as the neighborhood's informal living room. The nearby Isar riverside path connects the quarter to Munich's broader cycling and walking network.
