Ehrenfeld

Ehrenfeld, just west of Cologne's city center, was built up in the 19th century as a dense working-class and industrial district, with textile factories and railway infrastructure defining the neighborhood well into the 20th century. From the 1960s onward, Turkish migration left a lasting imprint — mosques, bakeries, and grocery stores on Venloer Strasse remain visible markers of that history. The 2000s brought a second transformation as creative industries and club culture moved into vacant industrial halls: venues like Gebäude 9 and Helios37 helped earn Cologne its reputation as a serious music city. Large-scale murals painted across fire walls make Ehrenfeld arguably the densest open-air gallery in the city. Despite rising rents, the neighborhood holds onto its mixed identity — pubs beside studios, Turkish bakeries beside vegan cafés.
