Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University

The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum on the New Brunswick campus of Rutgers University is one of the largest and most respected university art museums in the United States. Founded as the Rutgers University Art Gallery in 1966 and renamed in 1983 after donor Jane Voorhees Zimmerli, it holds roughly 60,000 works ranging from the fifteenth century to the present. Its centrepiece is the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection of Nonconformist Art from the Soviet Union, with around 20,000 pieces the largest assembly of Soviet nonconformist art anywhere, from Erik Bulatov to Ilya Kabakov. Other strengths include French prints, nineteenth-century American painting and Japanese woodblocks. Admission is free; the George Street building is by architect Richard Stein, 1966.
