Jewish Museum Vienna

The Jewish Museum Vienna occupies two buildings: Palais Eskeles at Dorotheergasse 11 and the Misrachi-Haus on Judenplatz. Founded in 1895, it was one of the world's first Jewish museums; the Nazis dissolved it in 1938 and looted the collection, and it reopened in its current form in 1993. Palais Eskeles, once the Arnstein banking family's home, houses the permanent show "Our City!" on Viennese Jewish life up to 1945, plus an open visible storage with rescued ritual objects. The Misrachi-Haus on Judenplatz preserves the archaeological remains of the medieval Or Sarua Synagogue, destroyed in the Vienna Gesera of 1421.
