Kaba Halil Medresesi

The Kaba Halil Efendi Medresesi is an Ottoman madrasa built between 1754 and 1767 in the Atik Ali Paşa neighborhood of Istanbul's historic Fatih district. It was commissioned by Elhac Halil Efendi, who served as Kadı — chief judge — of Istanbul, following the Ottoman tradition of civic leaders endowing religious and educational institutions as acts of piety. His tomb stands within the courtyard graveyard, embedding the founder's memory directly into the institution he created. A minor but pointed controversy surrounds the building's restoration: a historic inscription above the third window of the entrance facade was removed and replaced with a window during repairs, raising unresolved questions about what was lost and why. The madrasa represents the independent typology of Ottoman theological colleges, with study cells and a teaching hall arranged around a central open courtyard.
