Çimenlik Castle

Çimenlik Castle — officially Kale-i Sultaniye — was built in 1462 by Sultan Mehmed II on the Asian shore of the Dardanelles, just years after his conquest of Constantinople. It was designed in tandem with Kilitbahir Castle directly opposite on the European bank, forming a paired chokepoint that allowed Ottoman forces to block or tax any vessel passing through the strait. Today the castle forms part of the Çanakkale Naval Museum, with outdoor exhibits of historical cannon barrels, anchors, and a replica of the Ottoman submarine Abdülhamid scattered across the grounds. The fortress walls offer unobstructed views across the narrowest stretch of the Dardanelles — the same waters where Allied fleets attempted their fateful passage in 1915.
