Vienna Künstlerhaus

The Kuenstlerhaus on Karlsplatz is one of Vienna's key exhibition buildings and since 1868 the home of the Cooperative of Visual Artists of Vienna, the city's oldest artists' association. August Weber designed the building as an Italianate neo-Renaissance villa, clearly visible between the Musikverein and Karlskirche on the late Ringstrasse. Out of the conflict between conservatives and reformers in the cooperative the Vienna Secession around Gustav Klimt and Josef Hoffmann broke away in 1897 and built its own exhibition pavilion a few hundred metres away. After several years of renovation the Kuenstlerhaus reopened in 2020 and today houses Albertina Modern, the Stadtkino cinema, the Neue Staatsoper and still the Kuenstlerhaus association itself, with rotating exhibitions of contemporary art.
