Lindenhof

Lindenhof is a wooded hilltop at the center of Zurich's Altstadt, widely considered the oldest continuously settled spot in the city. In the 1st century AD, a Roman customs fort called Turicum occupied the site — inscription stones and foundation remains survive in the nearby city museum and beneath the current square. The Carolingians later built a palace here, though virtually nothing of it is visible above ground today. Now the hill is a shaded public square with a pétanque court and oversized chess figures, functioning as a quiet retreat above the city's rooftops. From the western viewing platform, the panorama takes in the Limmat, the old town's tiled roofscape, and on clear days the line of the Alps.
