Bahnhofstrasse

Bahnhofstrasse was laid out in the 1860s over the filled-in moat of Zürich's demolished medieval fortifications, designed as a grand boulevard befitting an emerging financial capital. The 1.4-kilometre stretch from the main railway station to Bürkliplatz on Lake Zürich lines up international luxury flagships alongside long-established Zürich institutions such as Confiserie Sprüngli, at its current address since 1859. A persistent urban legend holds that the vaults of Swiss banks beneath the pavement store hundreds of tonnes of gold — unconfirmed, but never officially denied. Double rows of linden trees shade the summer crowds, trams still cross the street on Line 11, and the southern end opens onto an unobstructed view of the lake and the Alps beyond.
