Kunsthaus Zürich

Kunsthaus Zürich on Heimplatz is Switzerland's largest art museum, with holdings spanning the Middle Ages to contemporary art. The neoclassical main building by Karl Moser opened in 1910 as the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft's flagship project; over a century later, British architect David Chipperfield completed a striking extension in 2021 that nearly doubled the exhibition space, connecting to the original via an underground passage. The museum holds one of the largest collections of Edvard Munch works outside Norway and a defining Giacometti collection — the sculptor bequeathed significant parts of his estate directly to the institution. Visitors move between the intimate gallery rooms of the Moser building, where Monet, Picasso, and Chagall hang, and the soaring light-filled halls of the Chipperfield wing devoted to international contemporary art. Evening events and rotating special exhibitions keep the program active well into the week.
