Mitinskoe Cemetery

Mitinskoye Cemetery on Moscow's north-western edge was laid out in 1978. It gained international notice as the burial place of the firefighters and reactor staff who died of acute radiation sickness in Moscow's specialist hospitals in the days after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Their 28 lead-sealed coffins lie in their own avenue, with a central memorial bronze. The cemetery is one of the simplest and most haunting memorial sites of the nuclear catastrophe.
