Poniatowski Bridge

Landmark Vistula bridge named after Polish national hero Prince Jozef Poniatowski. Built between 1904 and 1914 under Russian rule as a stone arch bridge with elaborate granite portals, it was severely damaged in both world wars and rebuilt each time: blown up in 1915 by the retreating Russian army, and again in September 1944 by the Wehrmacht during the Warsaw Uprising. The viaduct extends Aleje Jerozolimskie and links the Powisle district with Praga on the east bank. Protected as a Polish national monument. Walking from the Old Town towards the National Stadium in Praga, visitors cross the bridge with views of the Centrum tower and the chimneys of the former Koneser vodka distillery.
