Strauss Museum
Also known as: Museum of the Johann Strauss Dynasty
The Museum of the Johann Strauss Dynasty was a private specialist museum in Vienna's Leopoldstadt district, open from March 2015 to March 2020, and the first in the city dedicated to the whole Strauss family: Johann Strauss the Elder, his sons Johann the Younger, Josef and Eduard, and the grandson Johann Strauss III. Original documents, autograph scores, engravings and photographs traced the dynasty's career from suburban dance halls to imperial court balls. After five years the museum closed for good in March 2020 because of financial difficulties, and parts of its holdings passed to other Vienna music institutions. For now visitors who want to follow the Strauss family in Vienna fall back on the Strauss birthplace on Praterstrasse, the Haus der Musik, and the Strauss apartment near the Stadtpark.
