Augarten
Vienna
Also known as: MUVS
The MUVS in Vienna's Rudolfsheim district is the world's only museum devoted exclusively to contraception, pregnancy tests, and abortion. Gynaecologist Christian Fiala founded it in 2003 and has since assembled some 1,300 objects. The collection ranges from ancient bronze pessaries through frog-based pregnancy tests of the 1930s to early 1960s contraceptive pill packs. A dedicated section documents illegal abortion methods and the long road to Austria's 1975 liberalised law. Visitors follow a chronological walk through original documents, advertising posters, and medical instruments, revealing how birth control has always been entangled with women's rights, religion, and politics. School groups visit with guided programmes.
