Mumok

Vienna

mumok is Austria's largest museum of modern and contemporary art, opened in 2001 as the centrepiece of Vienna's MuseumsQuartier. The dark basalt-lava monolith by architects Ortner & Ortner stands in sharp contrast to the Baroque ensemble of Maria-Theresien-Platz. Nine levels unfold roughly 10,000 works spanning classical modernism, Viennese Actionism with Guenter Brus and Otto Muehl, Pop Art by Warhol and Lichtenstein, and the Fluxus movement. The founding gift came from Aachen collectors Peter and Irene Ludwig. Rotating exhibitions tackle current positions, while a cinema, library, and family workshop round out the experience.
