Mustafa Kemal Ataturk monument at Gulhane Park

At the entrance to Gülhane Park, in the shadow of Topkapi Palace, stands this bronze monument to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938), founder of the modern Turkish Republic. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, Atatürk drove the abolition of the sultanate and caliphate and overhauled the state, alphabet, and legal system within a single decade — one of the most concentrated top-down modernizations in 20th-century history. The statue rises from a marble base and sits within one of Istanbul's oldest urban parks, which bursts into color each spring with rows of tulips echoing the flower's deep roots in Ottoman garden tradition. Worth a brief stop when exploring the park or the adjacent palace grounds.
