Neuberger Museum of Art

The Neuberger Museum of Art sits on the campus of Purchase College in the suburbs north of New York City. It opened in 1974 thanks to investment banker Roy R. Neuberger, who donated more than 700 works of American modernism, including paintings by Edward Hopper, Milton Avery and Jackson Pollock. Today the collection holds over 6,000 objects, with a major section devoted to African art and a strong contemporary programme. Philip Johnson designed the austere brick pavilion with an interior courtyard in 1974 as part of a larger campus master plan by Edward Larrabee Barnes. The museum now hosts rotating exhibitions, concerts and the annual Roy R. Neuberger Prize for emerging artists.
