Palais Auersperg

Also known as: Palais Auersperg, ehem. Palais Rofrano

The Palais Auersperg at Auerspergstrasse 1 in Vienna's 8th district Josefstadt is one of the city's most impressive Baroque town palaces. Construction began in 1706 for Hieronymus Capece de Rofrano, president of the Court War Council, initially to plans by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and later extended by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. In 1786 the twelve-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart conducted a concert in the festival hall here, a detail still emphasised in the palace's marketing today. The Auersperg family acquired the palace in 1953. It now serves as the venue for the Salonorchester Alt Wien, balls and gala dinners; guided concert evenings with a Mozart and Strauss programme are the main offering for visitors.
