Pasqualati House

Pasqualati House occupies a prominent spot on the Moelker Bastei 8, a surviving stretch of the old Vienna city wall, and was built 1791-1798 for the court advocate and physician Baron Johann Baptist von Pasqualati. It is famous as the long-term Vienna address of Ludwig van Beethoven, who lived as a tenant on the fourth floor on and off between 1804 and 1815, composing here the opera Fidelio, the 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th symphonies and the piano piece Fuer Elise. Beethoven's former apartment now houses a branch of the Wien Museum, with original furniture, his battered piano and letters. Four small rooms, creaking parquet, a view across the rooftops of the inner city - one of Vienna's most affecting composer museums.
