Philopappos Hill

Philopappos Hill - known in antiquity as the Hill of the Muses - lies south-west of the Acropolis and carries the 2nd-century tomb of prince Philopappos at its summit. It belongs to the green chain of hills that walls off the south side of old Athens. Kimon and Sulla used it as a military camp, and in the 16th century the Ottomans set artillery here, from which they shelled the Acropolis in 1687. The paved path designed by Dimitrios Pikionis in the 1950s, a beautiful composition of reused antique fragments and new stone slabs, climbs gently up. From the top you get an unbroken view of the Acropolis, the Aegean to the south, and Lycabettus to the north, plus rocks to sit on under umbrella pines.
