Saviour Square

Plac Zbawiciela in central Warsaw's Srodmiescie district takes its name from the great Church of the Holiest Saviour, built by architect Jozef Pius Dziekonski between 1901 and 1927 in red-brick historicist style. The curved corner buildings around the square, completed in the 1920s, are key works of Warsaw modernism. From 2012 to 2015 Julita Wojcik's rainbow sculpture installed here sparked nationwide debate, was set on fire several times and became a national and international symbol for LGBT rights in Poland. Today the square is the heart of hip Warsaw nightlife, with cafes, bars and restaurants such as Charlotte, Plan B and Tuk Tuk. On warm evenings the crowd spills onto the street, turning the roundabout into a lounge.
