Defenestrations of Prague 1618

A memorial at Prague Castle marks the spot where, on 23 May 1618, Protestant Bohemian nobles threw three Catholic Habsburg governors from the window of the Bohemian Chancellery — an act of defiance that triggered the Thirty Years' War and reshaped the religious map of Europe. The three men survived the roughly 17-metre fall, landing in a moat below; Catholic propagandists declared it a miracle, while Protestants credited a pile of dung. That dispute over the meaning of survival itself became one of the war's earliest propaganda battles. Today a modest commemorative plaque marks the site, visited mainly by those who know their early modern European history but carrying outsized consequence for anyone who does.
