Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising

Known locally as the UFO Bridge, the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising is an asymmetric steel cable-stayed bridge built between 1967 and 1972 by engineer Arpád Tesár and architects Jan Lacko and Ivan Slameň. It holds a rare distinction: it is one of the few major river bridges in the world with no supports standing in the riverbed, a feat of socialist-era engineering driven partly by the need to preserve Danube navigation. The bridge is named for the 1944 Slovak National Uprising, the armed resistance against Nazi occupation. Atop its single 84-metre pylon sits a flying-saucer-shaped observation deck and restaurant — the source of the UFO nickname — offering sweeping views over Bratislava's old town, the Danube, and the Petržalka housing estate across the river.
