Kasteel Hoensbroek

Kasteel Hoensbroek is one of the largest moated castles in the Netherlands, situated in the southern Limburg district of Hoensbroek near Heerlen. Its foundations date to the mid-13th century, but the castle took its current form across the 17th and 18th centuries, when the main manor house and two outer courtyards were given their baroque character. The oldest surviving structure is a round tower at the eastern corner, built from around 1360, which makes the site's layered construction history legible at a glance. Listed as a Rijksmonument under Dutch national heritage law, the castle is open to visitors who can tour the manor interior and walk the stone-bridged courtyards surrounded by water-filled moats.
