Severins Bridge

The Severinsbrücke is a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Rhine in southern Cologne, completed in 1959 as one of the first of its kind in Germany. Its defining feature is an asymmetric A-shaped pylon on the Deutz bank, from which cables fan out to one side only — an engineering approach that was genuinely novel at the time and distinguishes it from the suspension bridges it replaced after wartime destruction. Named after the nearby Severinsviertel, the bridge was part of Cologne's postwar effort to restore Rhine crossings lost during World War II. Pedestrians and cyclists crossing today get unobstructed views of the Cathedral and the southern Rhine embankment.
