Wildenburger Kopf

The Wildenburger Kopf rises to 670.7 m in the Schwarzwälder Hochwald plateau of the Hunsrück highlands, its summit occupied by the ruins of the medieval Wildenburg castle, into which a modern observation tower has been built. Before the castle's construction the hill bore the name Schadeberg and already hosted an earlier fortification, the Schadeburg — two overlapping layers of medieval defensive history on a single peak. Stretching northeast along a rocky ridge from the summit is the Wildenburg nature reserve, one of the quieter protected landscapes of the western Hunsrück. Well-marked hiking trails lead through mixed forest to the top, where the tower offers an open panorama across the forested ridgelines on clear days.
