Wupperfeld

Liked by

Wupperfeld is a station on the Wuppertal Schwebebahn, the world's oldest operational suspended monorail system, constructed between 1898 and 1903. The station sits on the so-called Wasserstrecke, the section where the railway glides above the River Wupper, and is listed as a protected architectural monument in North Rhine-Westphalia. Its slender steel framework and cast-iron Jugendstil detailing are characteristic of the imperial-era engineering aesthetic that defines the entire line. Riding through here offers a glimpse of daily Wuppertal life as it has functioned for over 120 years — suspended above the river through the Oberbarmen district.
