Ankara serves as the capital, while Istanbul is the country's largest city and a former imperial seat — first as Constantinople under the Byzantine Empire, then as the heart of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey borders eight countries and is surrounded by the Black Sea, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean.
