The conning tower of Soviet submarine S-13 stands as a memorial in Nizhny Novgorod, marking one of the most morally complex episodes of World War II at sea. In January 1945, S-13 sank the MV Wilhelm Gustloff — killing an estimated 9,300 people, mostly refugees and wounded soldiers, making it the deadliest maritime disaster in recorded history — and weeks later the hospital ship Steuben. Commander Alexander Marinesko was celebrated as a Soviet hero, yet the sinkings remain deeply controversial in Germany and internationally. The preserved conning tower places visitors in direct confrontation with the physical remains of that history, raising questions that official memorial plaques rarely resolve.
