This preserved 160 mm mortar M1943 (GRAU index 52-M-852) is a static outdoor memorial exhibit in Kharkiv representing one of the heaviest Soviet mortars deployed in World War II. The designation MT stands for Minomyot Transportiruyemy — 'transportable mortar' — a somewhat ironic label given the weapon's weight of over 1,000 kg. Entering service in 1943, it fired 40 kg shells and was considered among the most powerful mortar designs of the war. The exhibit offers a tangible reference point for the heavy Soviet artillery technology that played a significant role in the fierce battles fought around Kharkiv.
