Berlin-Charlottenburg station sits on the brick viaduct of the elevated Stadtbahn, part of the city rail line that has threaded through central Berlin since its opening in 1882 during the Wilhelmine era. The station marks the junction where the Wetzlar Railway branches off from the main Stadtbahn corridor — a role it has held continuously since the imperial period, giving it an outsized place in Berlin's rail geography. Traces of the original Gründerzeit station fabric survive despite later renovations, earning the structure listed-monument protection. Today it functions as a western inner-city interchange for multiple S-Bahn lines alongside regional and long-distance services.
