Abbatiale de La Trinité

The abbey church of La Trinité in Vendôme ranks among the most significant medieval ecclesiastical buildings along the Loire Valley and carries classified historic-monument status under French heritage law. The monastery was founded in 1034 by Count Geoffroy II Martel of Vendôme and his wife Agnes of Burgundy, reportedly to house a relic known as the Holy Tear of Christ — a claim that drew pilgrims throughout the medieval period and shaped the town's identity for centuries. The west facade is considered a rare masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic stonework, with intricately carved tracery that has few equals in France. The interior remains open to visitors, while parts of the former monastic complex now house municipal museum spaces.
