Abbaye Notre-Dame de Jouarre

The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Jouarre is a Benedictine convent in Seine-et-Marne, founded around 601 AD, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited monastic communities in France. Its most remarkable feature lies underground: a 7th-century Merovingian crypt sheltering the sarcophagus of Saint Agilbert, Bishop of Paris, whose elaborately carved lid is considered one of the finest examples of early medieval sculpture in the country. The complex has been a classified historic monument since 1840. Guided tours bring visitors into the crypt — a rare surviving pre-Romanesque burial chamber still embedded within a living monastic community.
