Abbaye de Murbach

The Abbey of Murbach sits deep in an Alsatian valley of the Vosges mountains and ranks among the most significant early medieval monastic foundations in the region. Founded in 727 by Saint Pirminius, its abbot held the rank of imperial prince (Fürstabt) with a seat in the Imperial Diet — an extraordinary privilege that gave Murbach political influence for centuries. What survives is the Romanesque choir and iconic twin-towered facade from the 12th century, built in warm red sandstone and framed by densely forested hillsides. The nave was demolished in the 18th century when the monks relocated to Guebwiller, lending the remaining structure an evocative ruin quality. Classified as a French historical monument, the site rewards visitors with a rare combination of early medieval architectural integrity and deep forest silence.
