Abritus

Abritus is an ancient site near present-day Razgrad in northeastern Bulgaria — originally a Roman fort and civilian vicus in the province of Moesia inferior, later expanded into an early Byzantine town. The site gained historical weight through the Battle of Abritus in 251 AD, when Gothic forces routed the Roman army and killed Emperor Decius in combat, making him one of the very few Roman emperors to die in battle. Archaeological excavations have uncovered fort walls, road grids, and building remains spanning several construction phases, offering a layered picture of Roman frontier urbanism. The ruins illustrate the military and civilian life of Rome's Danubian border zone.
